The NRHA Events Department has been closely monitoring the EHV-1 outbreak. While we do not feel there is an immediate threat to horses coming to the NRHA Derby, we are taking every extra precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all of our equine friends. Under the council of our show veterinarian, we have implemented the following new check-in procedures. Please read carefully to ensure an easy and speedy check-in!

1) ALL HORSE TRAILERS MUST COME THROUGH THE SOUTH ENTRANCE OF BARN ROW (between the Super barn and barn 6) AND WILL BE STOPPED FOR INSPECTION! Each horse’s breed registration papers (or NRHA Competition License if it is not a registered horse), health papers and negative coggins will all be asked for and checked before the horses will be allowed to unload. Please have your papers easily accessible and ready to show.
  1. Health papers must have been completed within the last 30 days. Health papers will be required for ALL horses, including horses from Oklahoma. If a horse arrives without health papers, the show veterinarian will be onsite to issue papers for a fee.
  2. The negative coggins must have been done within the past 12 months.
  3. Horses cannot move in before 8am, Friday, June 24th.
2) It is highly recommended that if a horse has not been vaccinated within the last 60 days with the equine rhinopneumonitis vaccination that they been vaccinated (or re-vaccinated) at least 10 days prior to arriving at the show.

3) Oklahoma State Fair Park staff have assured us that they will be thoroughly disinfecting the entire barn area prior to our arrival.

4) You will also notice that we will be taking additional steps such as providing hand sanitizer, gloves and disposable towels to the pre-check judge.

5) Be sure to visit with your veterinarian about any additional precautions you should take as an exhibitor.

We will do our best to keep everyone flowing in as expeditiously as possible. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions please feel free to email us at events@nrha.com.

Travel safe,

THE SHOW IS STILL ON!
The NRHA has had multiple discussions with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and Acting Oklahoma State Veterinarian Mike Herrin in regards to plans for upcoming shows. After evaluating all current information on the equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) and under advice of Dr. Herrin, all Oklahoma shows should proceed as scheduled.

The Oklahoma State Veterinary Office and Oklahoma State Fair Park management are cooperating to insure that every possible measure is taken to prevent such an outbreak from occurring in Oklahoma City. The Fair Park is disinfecting each stall after every show prior to introduction of new animals. They are also providing an isolation area, in the event a fever or neurologic symptoms develop, in order to separate any horse while at the facility. The Oklahoma State Veterinary office, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL), are gearing up to provide rapid test results of samples submitted for EHV-1 testing.

“In addition to our normal thorough cleaning procedures, we have been in close contact with and are following all recommendations from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture (Commissioner Jim Reece) and the Acting State Veterinarian, Dr. Michael Herrin,” stated Oklahoma State Fair, Inc. President & CEO Tim O’Toole. “We are also working closely with all of our equine show promoters to make sure that they are aware of what precautions we are taking to prevent the potential spread of EHV-1 at State Fair Park. We anticipate that the horse shows scheduled for the rest of the summer will go on as planned.”
